How To Do a Nevada DMV Change of Address

If you’re planning on moving to, from, or within the state of Nevada then you’re going to want to make sure you know exactly what’s expected of you in terms of DMV paperwork. Like all states, you’ll be required to get your Nevada DMV Change of Address forms in order before you can truly settle in as a resident—including your address on your driver’s license and your vehicle’s registration, if applicable.

It’s good practice to take care of all of your paperwork as early as possible. And since Nevada requires that you file your change of address paperwork within 30 days of establishing residency, you’ll want to have a plan in place for what you need to do.

Not sure where to start? We’ve put together all of the information that you’ll need to complete your Nevada DMV change of address and vehicle registration forms, so read through the information below and then make your way to a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office to get started.

If You’re Moving to Nevada from Another State

Will you need to get a new driver’s license if moving to Nevada from another state?

How do you get one?

To get a Nevada driver’s license as a formerly out-of-state resident you’ll have to go to a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office in person, since unfortunately you can’t do a Nevada DMV change of address online or over the phone.

Per the rules in most states, expect that Nevada driver’s licenses for new residents to the state are only available to those who do not have any outstanding suspensions, revocations, or cancellations on their out of state driver’s license and who have not been previously deemed unfit or unsafe to drive by the NV DMV or an outside court.

You will need to bring along the following documentation when you visit the NV DMV:

    • Application for Driving Privileges or ID Card
    • Current out-of-state driver’s license
    • Proof of identity
    • Proof of social security number
    • Proof of Nevada address (two documents)

To see the list of accepted documents for a new Nevada driver’s license, head here.

Note that if your name does not match the name on the documents showing proof of identity then you will also have to bring along proof of name change, such as your marriage license, divorce decree, or a court order for a legal name change.

    Is there a fee?

Yes. The fee for a new, non-commercial driver’s license in Nevada is $42.25, though costs may vary in some instances. Visit the fees page for more information.

Does a Nevada DMV change of address require a driving test?

No, provided you have a current and valid out-of-state driver’s license. You will be required to take a vision test though.

How long do you have to get a Nevada driver’s license or ID card?

Nevada provide new residents with 30 days after establishing residency to get their state driver’s license. Head to the NV DMV if you plan to:

      • Live in Nevada for at least 7 months out of the year
      • Register to vote in Nevada
      • Work in Nevada
      • Run a business out of Nevada

How long do you have to update your vehicle’s registration?

Within 30 days of establishing residency.

How do you update your vehicle’s registration as a new resident of Nevada?

You’ll have to visit a Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles office in person to update your vehicle’s registration.

Make sure to bring along the following documents:

        • Nevada evidence of insurance
        • Nevada emissions vehicle inspection report
        • Vehicle title (unless held by lienholder)
        • Current vehicle registration, license plates, and odometer reading
        • Vehicle identification number (VIN) inspection report

Learn more about required documents here.

        What is the registration fee?

It depends on your vehicle. Visit the fee estimation page to calculate.

        If You’re Moving Within Nevada

Nevada requires that you update your driver’s license within 30 days with your new address when moving within the state (and no, changing your address with the post office doesn’t cut it).

You have three options for updating your address on your Nevada driver’s license:

        1. Online. Visit Nevada’s MyDMV system and fill out the information.

        2. By mail. Send your completed Nevada DMV change of address form to: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89711.

        3. By fax. Fax your completed form to (775) 684-4829.

The NV DMV requests you do not visit in person for a change of address unless you are also completing another transaction.

Will Nevada issue you a new driver’s license if you’re moving within the state?

Yes. A new driver’s license will be mailed to you within 10 days.

How much does a Nevada change of address cost?

An update to your Nevada address with the DMV is $4.25.

What information do you need to provide to update your address on your driver’s license?

To change your address on your Nevada driver’s license or identification card, you will need to provide:

          • Completed Change of Address Form
          • Payment authorization form if sending in by mail or fax

How do you update your address on your vehicle registration?

Head to NV MyDMV to update online, or include with your mailed or fax change of address request.

What information do you need to provide to update your vehicle registration?

When you apply for your change of address on your driver’s license, you will also be able to apply to update your vehicle registration, so follow the same steps above.

If You’re Moving From Nevada to Another State

Do you need to notify the state of Nevada if you’re moving to another state without a registered car?

Yes. Fill out the Change of Address Notification form and mail it to Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89711. You can also fax it to (775) 684-4829.

Do you need to notify the state of Nevada if you’re moving to another state with your registered vehicle?

Yes. You will be able to do so on the Change of Address Notification form.

Do you need to return your Nevada license plates?

Yes. Ship your plates to Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, 555 Wright Way, Carson City, NV 89711 along with a signed letter requesting cancellation.
