How To Do a New Hampshire DMV Change of Address
Planning on moving to, from, or within the state of New Hampshire? Make sure you know exactly what’s expected of you. Not sure where you should start? That’s where we come in. We’ve put together all of the information that you’ll need to complete your New Hampshire DMV change of address and vehicle registration forms, so read through the information below and then make your way to a New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles office to get started.
Getting Started
Like all states, you’ll be required to get your New Hampshire DMV Change of Address forms in order before you can truly settle in as a resident—including your address on your driver’s license and your vehicle’s registration (if you’ll be moving with a car).
It’s good practice to take care of all of your paperwork as early as possible, especially if you’re going to be driving in the state or want to start applying for jobs. And since New Hampshire requires that you file your change of address paperwork within just two months of establishing residency in the state, there really isn’t much time to waste.
Moving to New Hampshire from Another State
You will need to get a new driver’s license if you’re moving to New Hampshire from another state.
How do you get one?
To get a New Hampshire driver’s license as a formerly out-of-state resident you’ll have to go to a New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles office in person since unfortunately, you can’t do a New Hampshire DMV change of address online or over the phone.
Per the rules in most states, New Hampshire driver’s licenses for new residents are only available to those who do not have any outstanding suspensions, revocations, or cancellations on their out of state driver’s license and who have not been previously deemed unfit or unsafe to drive by the NH DMV or an outside court.
Required documents
You will need to bring along the following documentation when you visit the Division of Motor Vehicles:
-
- Your current out-of-state driver’s license
- Proof of identity
- Proof of New Hampshire residency
- Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card (save time by filling this out in advance and bringing the completed form with you to the DMV)
See the full list of accepted documents here. If your out-of-state driver’s license has been lost or stolen, you can still transfer it to New Hampshire by filling out a Verification of Out of State License form.
Note that if your name on your proof of identity does not match the name on your current driver’s license then you will also have to bring along proof of name change, such as your marriage license, divorce decree, or a court order for a legal name change.
Is there a fee?
Yes. The fee for a new driver’s license in New Hampshire is $50, and $60 if you want to get a REAL ID, which adheres to the new federal laws around domestic travel.
Does a New Hampshire DMV change of address require a driving test?
No, provided you have a current and valid out-of-state driver’s license. You will have to get a vision test however.
How long do you have to get a New Hampshire driver’s license or ID card?
New Hampshire requires that you get your DMV change of address handled within 60 days of establishing residency in that state. So how do you know if you’re officially a resident? Head to a NH Division of Motor Vehicles office if you plan to:
-
- Live in New Hampshire for at least 7 months out of the year
- Register to vote in New Hampshire
- Work in New Hampshire
- Run a business out of New Hampshire
- Send your children to school in New Hampshire
How do you update your vehicle’s registration as a new resident of New Hampshire?

Make sure to bring along the following documentation when you go:
-
- Your current out-of-state title

If your vehicle is leased or title-exempt, or if there is a lienholder on it, you will also need to provide a copy of your out-of-state registration, the lease agreement (if applicable), and/or the lienholder’s name and address.
How long do you have to update your vehicle’s registration?

If You’re Moving Within New Hampshire

To change your address, fill out a Record Change Request form and bring it in to your nearest DMV. You can also mail the completed form to NH Dept. of Safety, DMV – Driver Licensing, 23 Hazen Drive, Concord, NH 03305.
Will New Hampshire issue you a new driver’s license if you’re moving within the state?
