Moving Truck Rentals FAQs
Trying to decide the best way to move from your current home to your new one is not always easy, especially with the time, money and physical effort involved, and with three valid methods – truck rental, professional moving company and container transport – to choose from, it gets even harder.
Each of these three moving options offer pros and cons but in this article, we’re going to answer some of the most commonly asked questions surrounding moving truck rentals. With this information, you’ll be better prepared for making the right choice for your upcoming move.
What kinds of truck rentals are available?
Truck rental agencies usually have many different models to choose from. Truck rentals can be as small as a van or as large as a 26-cubic-foot truck. The size you’re going to need is ultimately determined by how many rooms your house has and how much stuff is in those rooms.
Can I pick up a rental truck in one state and return it in another?
Yes. In most cases, moving truck rental agencies maintain service centers in or around nearly every major city so you can return your rental to the one closest to your new home.
How are rental costs quoted?
The quote for your rental includes the type of truck you are renting, the duration of your rental and the distance you are traveling. It does not include any supplemental insurance coverage, fuel costs, moving accessories, toll charges or other related fees.
How far in advance should I reserve a truck rental?
Ideally, as soon as you have an idea of when you are going to be moving, you should call or go online and reserve the moving truck of your choice. The earlier you make your reservation, the better the chance that the size truck you need will be available. Waiting until the day before you need it is never a good idea.
What happens if the moving truck breaks down?
When using the truck rental, you should always have the rental agency’s emergency number in the event that the truck malfunctions. Every rental agency has different policies regarding this so ask the representative before you drive off the lot so you know what you need to do should the truck break down while in route.
Do I need a credit card to rent a truck?
This depends on the rental agency. Some will allow you to pay with cash or personal check but not all offer this option.
What if I need to cancel my reservation?
Again, this depends on the rental agency you choose, but most ask for at least 48 hour notice if you want to cancel the reservation. Some agencies may also charge you a cancellation fee.
Do I get a refund if I return the truck early?
If the truck is used for a one-way move and you return it early, no refund is usually granted. On local, round-trip moves, the renter will only be charged for the days he has the rental so a refund will usually be granted for the unused days.
How old do I have to be to rent a moving truck?
Most truck rental agencies require the renter to be at least 18 years old, but some have higher age requirements so you should always inquire with the company you are considering.
Will I be charged extra fees if I return the truck rental on time?
If the moving truck is in the same condition and the fuel tank is filled to at least the same capacity as when you drove it off the lot, then you shouldn’t accrue any additional costs. However, you may be charged if you used the on-board dolly or moving blankets or if you exceeded the mileage listed in your contract. These charges also depend on your rental agreement.
