Shopping for Storage – What Do You Need?
Storage units come in all shapes and sizes. Some are containers dropped at your doorstep, while others are large offsite rooms in climate-controlled, high-security buildings. Determining the option best for you starts with seven simple questions.
How much storage space do you need?
Remember, storage units can be packed to the rafters — square footage can be used both vertically and horizontally. Pack your belongings in stackable boxes and containers to minimize space requirements.
How long will you need storage?
If you’re only going to be storing items for a few days, then options like climate control and regular after-hours access may not be necessary. You may want to consider a portable container if you have short-term needs during your move.
How often do you need to access the storage?
Distance from your home, ease of access, and hours of operation make a big difference. Distance can determine whether your storage situation is a painless convenience or aggravating hassle.
What’s the climate?
Are any of your items susceptible to heat, cold, or humidity? Are floods, insects, or dust a concern? If so, make sure to find a climate controlled storage facility. You don’t want your items to be damaged while they sit in a storage locker.
What’s your moving budget?
Storage facilities come in all price ranges. Large high-security, climate-controlled spaces are the most expensive and small, bare-bones “garage style” units are on the low end of the price spectrum. Keep in mind, the bigger the storage space, the more you’ll pay per month.
How will you get into and out of the storage unit?
Will you move items yourself or get professional help? Visit the facility in person before renting a unit. You need to ensure your vehicle will be able to fit and maneuver around the storage yard.
How valuable are the items you plan to store?
Irreplaceable items should be stored in a climate-controlled facility with high security. A less expensive, slightly less secure facility may be appropriate for fully insured and easily replaceable items like standard furniture, electronics, and dishes.
