According to the study, the organization looked at employment growth, job security, terrorist attacks, mass shootings, assaults per capita, unemployment rates, road quality, active firefighters per capita, traffic fatalities per capita, natural disaster risk, poverty rates and more.

Each indicator was classified under three different categories: home and community safety, financial safety, and natural disaster risk.
