Where to Donate Your Stuff Before Moving
Whether you’re downsizing to a new home or purging before a move, there’s nothing better than eliminating clutter (hello: tight-fitting jeans, out-dated electronics and old baby toys). Not only will decluttering save you from wasting hours on packing, but it will also save you from spending unnecessary money on the overall relocation. Before purging your home, though, consider donating some of these gently-used items to various charities and non-profits first. If you’re not sure where or how to donate your stuff before moving, take a look at these 9 suggestions below.
Goodwill
Local Libraries
Dress for Success
Habitat for Humanity Restore
Baby2Baby
Food Banks
eBay Giving Works
Salvation Army
Pickup Please
Items that donation sites may not accept
Keep in mind that donation sites won’t accept everything. You’ll need to contact each organization separately to ask what items they do and do not accept. A few examples of items that won’t be accepted include: Upholstered items with rips, stains, tears, and/or pet odors; hazardous materials/chemicals; unframed mirrors or glass; broken glass; storm windows and single pane windows; metal blinds; corner tubs; cultured marble tubs; broken flooring; lighting that doesn’t work; encyclopedias and textbooks; electronics that are out of date.
Don’t forget to deduct the donations from your taxes
Also, don’t forget to save those donation receipts! Once you’ve dropped off your items with the non-profit, the charity organization should be able to provide you with a tax deduction receipt. Come spring time, these receipts could end up saving you a bundle on taxes.
