Check out our tips below for more information on the different offerings from U-Haul, Penske and Budget .

Three places to find a trailer rental for your next move

U-Haul

  • Cargo trailers – U-Haul’s cargo trailers are the company’s most popular option for DIY moves. Trailers are designed to be aerodynamic and lightweight, allowing customers to tow the trailer easily and efficiently behind almost any vehicle. What sets these trailers apart is the fact that they are enclosed. This protects furniture and belongings from Mother Nature while in transit. Every cargo trailer also has built-in lockable latches to keep items safe and secure. U-Haul offers cargo trailers in four different sizes: 4×8, 5×8, 5×10, and 6×12.
  • Utility trailers – U-Haul’s utility trailers are perfect for moving oversized cargo and landscaping materials. The open-top design allows for a number of things to fit inside, including tall items that may not fit inside the cargo trailer. U-Haul offers utility trailers in five different sizes: 4×7, 5×8, 5×9 with ramp, 6×12, and 6×12 with ramp.
  • Car/motorcycle trailers – Need to move your car or motorcycle? U-Haul’s car trailers may be a good choice for you. Whether you’re looking to tow all four wheels off the ground or tow with two wheels on the ground, there’s a car trailer that will meet your specific needs. The four different car and motorcycle trailer options offered by U-Haul include: tow dolly, auto transport, motorcycle trailer and 5×9 utility trailer with ramp.

Penske

  • Do not load personal possessions inside the towed vehicle.
  • Attach the towing device to your Penske rental truck before loading the vehicle.
  • Do not attempt to back up the moving truck while it’s attached to the trailer rental.
  • Center your vehicle with the front end facing forward.
  • Do not drive up the car carrier or tow dolly platform unless you have enough ground clearance.

Here’s a quick rundown from Penske on the company’s two trailer rental options.

  • Tow dolly – Want to take your car with you when you move? Penske’s tow dolly is an excellent option for you. According to the company, the tow dolly offers a load capacity of 4,300 pounds. It also comes with a 3 point tie-down strap system and attached ramps. The maximum width for towed vehicles on a tow dolly is 74 inches.
  • Car carrier – Penske’s second trailer option is their popular car carrier. The car carrier can hold up to 4,050 pounds. It also comes with a 3 point tie-down strap system and an 84-inch ramp. The car carrier can tow front-wheel drive vehicles, four-wheel-drive vehicles, all-wheel drive vehicles and vehicles with a maximum width of 79 inches.

Budget

  • Tow dolly – Looking to tow your car behind the moving truck? Try Budget’s car tow dolly. The rental is recommended for front-wheel drive vehicles, although Budget states that the tow dolly can carry all-wheel-drive vehicles, four-wheel-drive vehicles and rear-wheel vehicles as well. The tow dolly can handle most cars up to 3,600 pounds and front-wheel drive cars up to 3,300 pounds.
  • Car carrier – For a farther move, Budget’s car carrier is an excellent way to transport your car. These car trailers carry the entire car on top of a trailer that attaches to the back of the moving truck, according to the company. The car carrier is recommended for four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles. It has a weight capacity of 4,055 pounds, a maximum length of 12 feet and a minimum width of 6’7″ feet.
