How To Do an Arizona DMV Change of Address
If you’re planning on moving to, from, or within the sunny state of Arizona then you’re going to want to make sure that you know exactly what’s expected of you in terms of DMV paperwork. Like all other states, you’ll be required to get your Arizona DMV Change of Address forms in order before you can truly settle in as a resident—including your address on your driver’s license and your vehicle’s registration, if applicable.
It’s good practice to take care of all of your paperwork as early as possible, especially if you’re going to be driving in the state or want to start applying for jobs. And this is especially necessary in Arizona, since the state requires that you file your change of address paperwork immediately upon establishing residency.
Not sure where you should even start? That’s where we come in. We’ve put together all of the information that you’ll need to complete your Arizona DMV change of address and vehicle registration forms, so read through the information below and then make your way to an Arizona Motor Vehicle Services office to get started.
If You’re Moving to Arizona from Another State
Will you need to get a new driver’s license if moving to Arizona from another state?
Yes. Note that effective in 2020, you will be required to get an Arizona Travel ID. This is in keeping with the new federal policy requiring a Travel/REAL ID or passport for domestic travel as of October 1, 2020.
How do you get one?
To get an Arizona driver’s license as a formerly out-of-state resident you’ll have to go to an Arizona Motor Vehicle Services office in person, since unfortunately you can’t do an Arizona DMV change of address online or over the phone. You are, however, encouraged to start the application online.
Per the rules in most states, expect that Arizona driver’s licenses for new residents to the state are only available to those who do not have any outstanding suspensions, revocations, or cancellations on their out of state driver’s license and who have not been previously deemed unfit or unsafe to drive by the AZ DMV or an outside court.
You will need to bring along the following documentation when you visit the AZ DMV:
-
- Proof of identity (examples: birth certificate, U.S. passport or passport card, military ID card)
- Proof of social security number
- A completed Arizona Driver’s License Application (though you can fill this out on-site at the DMV, if you prefer)
- Current and valid driver’s license from your previous state, if applicable
See what documents are accepted here.
Note that if your name on your proof of identity does not match the name on your current driver’s license you will also have to bring along proof of name change, such as your marriage license, divorce decree, or a court order for a legal name change.
Is there a fee?
Yes. The fee for a non-commercial Arizona driver’s license is $25.
Does an Arizona DMV change of address require a driving test?
No, just a vision test, provided you have a current and valid out-of-state driver’s license. If you don’t have a valid existing license, you’ll have to do a written and driving test.
How long do you have to get an Arizona driver’s license or ID card?
Arizona is a unique state in that they require you to get your DMV change of address handled immediately upon establishing residency. So how do you know if you’re officially a resident? Head to the AZ DMV right away if you plan to:
-
- Live in Arizona at least 7 months out of the year
- Register to vote in Arizona
- Work in Arizona
- Run a business out of Arizona
How long do you have to update your vehicle’s registration?
Immediately after establishing residency.
How do you update your vehicle’s registration as a new resident of Arizona?

-
- Proof of car insurance meeting minimum levels of financial responsibility
- Proof of ownership
- Completed Title and Registration Application (to save yourself some time)
You may also be required to do an emissions test.
If you need some time to get your documents in order, Arizona will provide you with a 90 day temporary registration card for your vehicle.
What is the registration fee?
The fee to register a standard non-commercial vehicle in Arizona is $4 for the title fee, $8 for the registration fee, and $1.50 for the air-quality research fee.
If You’re Moving Within Arizona
You have 10 days after your move to update your Arizona driver’s license with your new address when moving within the state (and no, changing your address with the post office isn’t going to cut it).
You have three primary options for updating your address on your Arizona driver’s license:
1. Fill out an Arizona DMV change of address form online. You can do so here. Be sure to have your current Arizona driver’s license number handy, as well as the last four digits of your social security number.
2. Go to an Arizona Motor Vehicle Services office in person. Find an Arizona driver’s license office near you and fill out an Arizona DMV change of address form in person.
3. Call the DMV directly. Want to do an Arizona DMV change of address over the phone? Call (602) 255-0072 if you live in Phoenix, (520) 629-9808 if you live in Tucson, and (800) 251-5866 if you live elsewhere in the state.
How much does an Arizona change of address cost?
An update to your Arizona address with the DMV is free, but you’ll need to pay $12 if you want a replacement driver’s license with your new address.
What information do you need to provide to update your address on your driver’s license?
To change your address on your Arizona driver’s license or identification card, you will need to provide:
-
- Your name
- Your date of birth
- Your driver’s license or identification card number
What information do you need to provide to update your vehicle registration?
Same as the requirements for a driver’s license, plus your vehicle’s plate number or VIN.
You can change the address on your vehicle’s registration online or in person at an Arizona Motor Vehicle Services office. Do keep in mind that you will need to complete this within just 10 days of your move, so time is of the essence.
Will Arizona issue you a new driver’s license if you’re moving within the state?
Not unless you want one.
If You’re Moving From Arizona to Another State
Do you need to notify Arizona Motor Vehicle Services if you’re moving to another state without a registered car?
Nope. When you receive a driver’s license in your new state of residency Arizona will automatically cancel your AZ driver’s license.
Do you need to notify Arizona Motor Vehicle Services if you’re moving to another state with your registered vehicle?
Yes. Filling out a post office change of address form will not update your vehicle’s registration, so it’s important that you let the Arizona DMV know otherwise you may still get charged property taxes in the state.
To do so, you’ll need to send a copy of your vehicle’s registration in your new state. Send it to:
Arizona Department of Transportation – Motor Vehicles Division
4005 N. 51 st Avenue
MD 555M
Phoenix, AZ 85031Do you need to return your Arizona license plates?
While not required, you can choose to return them if you please. Return by mail to the Arizona Department of Transportation – Motor Vehicles Division, 4005 N. 51 st Avenue, MD 555M, Phoenix, AZ 85031.
