How To Do an Oklahoma DMV Change of Address

If you’re planning on moving to, from, or within the great state of Oklahoma then you’re going to want to make sure that you know exactly what will be expected of you in terms of DMV paperwork. Like all states, you’ll be required to get your Oklahoma DMV Change of Address forms in order before you can truly settle in as a resident—including your address on your driver’s license and your vehicle’s registration, if applicable.

It’s good practice to take care of all of your change of address paperwork as early as possible, especially if you’re going to be driving in the state or want to start applying for jobs. And since Oklahoma requires that you file your change of address paperwork within just 10 days of moving if you’re a current resident, there really isn’t very much time to waste.

Not sure where you should even start? That’s where we come in. We’ve put together all of the information that you’ll need to complete your Oklahoma DMV change of address and vehicle registration forms, so read through the information below and then make your way to your nearest Oklahoma Department of Public Safety office to get started.

If You’re Moving to Oklahoma from Another State

Will you need to get a new driver’s license if you’re moving to Oklahoma from another state?

How do you get a new driver’s license in Oklahoma?

To get an Oklahoma driver’s license as a formerly out-of-state resident you will have to go to an Oklahoma Department of Public Safety office in person, since unfortunately you can’t do an Oklahoma DMV change of address online or over the phone.

Per the rules in most states, expect that an Oklahoma driver’s license for a new resident to the state is only available to those who do not have any outstanding suspensions, revocations, or cancellations on their out of state driver’s license and who have not been previously deemed unfit or unsafe to drive by the Oklahoma DMV or an outside court.

You will need to bring along the following documentation when you visit an Oklahoma Department of Public Safety office:

    • Primary proof of identity (for example, your birth certificate or passport)
    • Your current out-of-state driver’s license (must be either current or have expired less than six months ago)
    • Proof of social security number

Note that if your name on your proof of identity does not match the name on your current driver’s license then you will also have to bring along proof of name change, such as your marriage license, divorce decree, or a court order for a legal name change.

Does an Oklahoma DMV change of address require a driving test?

No, provided that you have a current and valid out-of-state driver’s license. That being said, you will be required to take a vision test.

    Is there a fee?

Yes. The cost for a new non-commercial driver’s license in Oklahoma includes a $25 fee for the application and a fee of $56.50 for the license.

How long do you have to get an Oklahoma driver’s license or ID card?

Unlike most states, Oklahoma does not have a specific requirement for how long new residents to the state have to complete their Oklahoma DMV change of address paperwork. As a general rule of thumb though, it’s a good idea to get your new driver’s license as soon as possible once you know that you will be a resident of the state.

So how do you know if you’re officially a resident of Oklahoma? Head to an OK Department of Public Safety office if you plan to:

      • Live in Oklahoma for at least 7 months out of the year
      • Register to vote in Oklahoma
      • Work in Oklahoma
      • Run a business out of Oklahoma
      • Send your children to school in Oklahoma

Do you need to register your out-of-state vehicle?

How long do you have to update your vehicle’s registration?

Oklahoma requires that you register your out-of-state vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency.

How do you update your vehicle’s registration as a new resident of Oklahoma?

Oklahoma vehicle registration services are not available online or over the phone, so you will need to visit your local Oklahoma Tax Commission or Tag Agent office or to fill out a registration application and pay the associated fee.

When you visit, make sure to bring along the following documents:

        • Your original out-of-state title
        • Proof of liability insurance (must be valid on Oklahoma)
        • A completed Application for Oklahoma Certificate of Title for a Vehicle (Form 701-6)
        • Lien documentation, if your vehicle is financed

If your vehicle is nine years old or less, you will also need to provide your odometer reading.

        What is the registration fee?

Upon your initial registration of an out-of-state vehicle, you will be required to pay an excise tax (estimate your excise tax amount here) as well as a title fee of $11 and a registration fee of $96.

        If You’re Moving Within Oklahoma

Oklahoma requires that you update your driver’s license within just 10 days with your new address when moving within the state (and no, changing your address with the post office doesn’t cut it). With little time to waste, make sure that you keep this task at the top of your post-moving to do list.

How do you do an Oklahoma change of address?

You can’t do your Oklahoma DMV change of address online, but you can do it by mail. Send a letter stating your old mailing address and new mailing address to Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, Driver License Services, PO Box 11415, Oklahoma City, OK 73136-0415.

If you’d rather do it in person, head to your nearest Department of Public Safety or Tag Agent office and submit your statement there.

Will Oklahoma issue you a new driver’s license if you’re moving within the state?

No, not unless you want one. If you’d like a duplicate driver’s license, visit a Department of Public Safety office to apply for one.

How much does an Oklahoma change of address cost?

An Oklahoma DMV change of address is free, but you’ll need to pay a $25 fee if you would like a duplicate license with your new address on it.

Do you need to update your address on your vehicle registration?

No. You can wait until you renew your vehicle registration documents to update your address. If you’d like new documents sooner than later, however, visit a tag agent and make your request. You will need to pay $11 for a duplicate title and $25 for your updated driver’s license (if you haven’t already secured the latter).

How long do you have to update your vehicle’s registration with your new address?

Oklahoma requires that you renew your vehicle’s registration once a year, so the next time you’re due to renew is when you will have to update the address on your vehicle’s registration.

If You’re Moving From Oklahoma to Another State

Do you need to notify the state of Oklahoma if you’re moving to another state without a registered car?

No. When you receive a driver’s license in your new state of residency Oklahoma will automatically cancel your OK driver’s license, meaning there’s nothing specific for you to do on your end.

Do you need to notify the state of Oklahoma if you’re moving to another state with your registered vehicle?

Only if your move is temporary. Otherwise, you’re good to go.

Do you need to return your Oklahoma license plates?

No, you can hold on to your Oklahoma license plates.

        Have any questions?

If you have any questions about changing your address on your driver’s license and/or vehicle’s registration when moving to, from, or within the state of Oklahoma, contact the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety at (405) 425-2424 (see the full list of DMV department phone numbers here). If you are going to be reaching out by phone, you are encouraged to have your driver’s license number and license plate number (if applicable) ready when you call.
