This April, the personal finance website released its study on “2023’s Most and Least Stressed States in America.” The study looked at all states, including Washington, DC, to compare stress levels across various important indicators such as credit score, hours of sleep, divorce rate, crime rate, health, number of psychologists per capita, housing costs, and more.

According to the results, the midwest is the place to be for those looking to relax. In fact, six of the top 10 least stressful states happen to be in the middle of the country. To find the most stressful areas of the country, head south – where, according to WalletHub, six of the top 10 most stressful states in America are located.

The 10 Least Stressed Out States

#1 Minnesota

The least stressful, most laid-back state in America is Minnesota. According to WalletHub’s study, Minnesotans stress way less about their health and safety than residents of other states. Residents of this midwestern state also tend to have higher credit scores, lower divorce rates, less health problems and more sleep.

#2 North Dakota

Minnesota’s next door neighbor, North Dakota, comes in as the number two least stressful state in America. Residents of North Dakota experience less stress than any other state when it comes to family-related matters. Other reasons this state is exceptionally less stressful than other states, includes the fact that North Dakota residents have higher credit scores, more affordable neighborhoods and lower divorce rates.

#3 Iowa

According to WalletHub’s research, Iowa is the third least stressful state in America. Residents of this midwestern state experience exceptionally low levels of stress over money-related matters and health and safety-related matters. Iowa has one of the lowest percentages of adults in poor health, and offers the most affordable housing of any other state in America.

#4 South Dakota

South Dakota ranks as the fourth least stressful state in America. WalletHub reports that the state’s residents have the least amount of stress over work-related matters than any other state in the country. South Dakota also has less family-related stressors than all states but two. Residents tend to get more sleep, and have higher credit scores and more affordable homes as well.

Farther west, Utah offers a laid-back and relaxing place to live for its residents. WalletHub points out that Utah residents work fewer average hours per week and experience less stress over work-related matters than nearly all other states in the U.S. Utah also has low levels of money-related stressors and low divorce rates.

#6 Nebraska

According to WalletHub, Nebraska is the sixth least stressed state in America. The finance website’s research shows that Nebraskans experience particularly low stress over family-related issues, and health and safety matters. Residents of Nebraska also tend to have higher credit scores, more affordable housing, and more hours of sleep a night than other Americans.

#7 New Hampshire

New Hampshire’s “live free or die” attitude may help keep stress levels low in this New England state, after all! According to WalletHub, New Hampshire residents have very few work-related stress woes or money-related stress issues. In fact, the state has the lowest percentage people living below the poverty level. New Hampshire also boasts the lowest percentage of adults in poor health, as well as an exceptionally low crime rate per capita.

#8 Vermont

Vermont ranks as the eighth least stressful state in America, according to WalletHub’s study. The Green Mountain State is the least stressed state when it comes family-related issues and the fifth least stressed state when it comes to health and safety. Vermont also ranked high for having fewer average work hours per week, a low percentage of unhealthy adults, plenty of psychologists per capita and the lowest crime rate per capita of any other state in the U.S.

#9 Colorado

According to WalletHub, Colorado ranks as the ninth least stressful state in America. The state’s residents have fewer work-related or health and safety-related issues than most others in the U.S. Also, of note, Colorado residents receive the highest number of sleeping hours per night than any other state except one.

#10 Wisconsin

Last but not least, Wisconsin comes in as the 10th least stressed state in America. WalletHub reports that the state’s residents have very low levels of stress when it comes to work-related matters, and a less than average amount of stress over money-related and family-related issues.
